Dear Reader,

Jan Alf Named Interim Director

As most of you know, Pepi Randolph has resigned from Forward Wisconsin to take a new position with the Potawatomi Business Development Corporation. All of us at Forward thank Pepi for his leadership these past two plus years and wish him well in his new position.

This is a pivotal time of the year for our organization. The Governor has included funding in his 2007 – 2009 Biennial Budget for Forward Wisconsin at the previous level as well as additional marketing funds for the Department of Commerce, some of which would support Forward’s marketing efforts. The Forward Wisconsin Board of Directors is taking this opportunity to revisit the “model” upon which to base the structure, mission and operation of Forward Wisconsin. We expect to publicly disclose this conceptual model later this spring.

At that time we will seek input from the various parties involved in economic development throughout the state. It will be the beginning of the process to evaluate how to best carry out Forward Wisconsin’s mission, not the final product. We will seek input from the Wisconsin Economic Development Association, the regional marketing groups and others actively involved in promoting Wisconsin’s economic vitality.

The Board has named Jan Alf “Interim Director” to be responsible for the day-to-day direction of Forward Wisconsin staff and activities. Please welcome Jan to this new challenge. Please don’t hesitate to contact Jan or other Forward staff with any comments or questions. Please watch this newsletter for periodic updates as we move through this exciting time. And, thank you for your continued support – it is very much appreciated.

Jerry Franke, Forward Wisconsin Vice Chairman

Forward Wisconsin's Jan Alf (pictured at left with Governor Doyle at last year's Wisconsin "BIO" Reception) is working with nearly 60 sponsors and partner organizations in putting the finishing touches on Wisconsin's effort at BIO 2007.

BIO 2007 is the world's largest biotechnology conference taking place in Boston on May 6-9. Wisconsin will have a 1600- square-foot pavilion at the event and over 200 Wisconsinites touting our state's biotech and life science resources.

Back by popular demand is the BioTheater section of the Wisconsin pavilion that is being organized by the Wisconsin Biotechnology and Medical Device Association. This year, 18 biotech and related companies will make live presentations in the BioTheater during the three-day exhibition. All BIO 2007 attendees - nearly 20,000 people - will receive a postcard informing them of the presentations. The presentations provide a great opportunity for Wisconsin firms to highlight their technologies to potential strategic partners, talent and investors.

Quarles & Brady, a law firm that has been a Forward Wisconsin investor since 1984, has stepped up with additional support of our efforts through the co-sponsorship of a Wisconsin Reception during BIO 2007. The reception will take place at the Boston Harbor Hotel on Monday evening, May 7th. Invitees include international biotech delegations, venture capitalists, biotech executives, and companies that Wisconsin bio firms hope to partner with in the future.

The event, hosted by Governor Doyle (invited), is expected to attract about 250 guests. Former U.S. Ambassador to Norway Tom Loftus and UW-Madison Professor of Virology Yoshiro Kawaoka are also expected to attend and join Governor Doyle in making brief presentations.

Forward Wisconsin regularly conducts "mini" marketing missions when we travel to U.S. cities for other events - in this case the "other" event is BIO 2007 in Boston. Heck, since we are in town anyway, why not try to meet with some business people, site selection consultants and investors and encourage them to do business in Wisconsin?

With that goal in mind, on March 23 we mailed nearly 300 letters from Governor Doyle to CEOs and key financial leaders in the Boston metro area touting Wisconsin's business climate and requesting a face-to-face appointment. For the mission, we focused primarily on biotech and advanced manufacturing for our target group. Beginning this week, calls are being placed to everyone that got a letter in hopes of scheduling meetings. Forward Wisconsin's Jan Alf and Scott Reigstad plan to make the calls on May 2,3, 8 and 9 when they are in Boston for BIO 2007.

ICSC. Forward Wisconsin will be participating in two International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) events over the next two months: an April 24-25 ICSC Wisconsin Idea Exchange and Alliance Program in Madison and the national association's large Spring Convention in Las Vegas on May 20-23. The ICSC is the global trade association of the shopping center industry and its Spring Convention brings together more than 35,000 developers, owners, retailers and lenders. The real estate executives, developers and consultants at the ICSC events also work in locating commercial and industrial businesses and are a good target for Wisconsin marketing efforts.

Chicago Marketing Mission. The dates have been announced for the annual Chicago Marketing Mission. The calls will take place on Wednesday, June 20 and Thursday, June 21, with the pre-mission meeting slated for Tuesday evening, June 19. For more information on the ICSC events or the Marketing Mission, you can contact Jan Alf at 262.691.7873 or by e-mail.
