Does your community make the grade when it comes
to economic development? If you want to find out
where you stand compared to the best, you should
attend the 2007 Governor's Conference on
Economic Development. The conference,
themed "Making the Grade: Benchmarks of
Excellence", will provide you with the results of a
groundbreaking 18-month study identifying the "Best
Practices" in economic development around the
country. You'll get all the details outlining the key
factors driving regions that have experienced
higher-than-average growth.
In addition, you'll learn what you
and your stakeholders can do to incorporate those
factors and best practices into your own economic
development policies to achieve excellence. The
event will take place February 7-9 in Madison at the
Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center.

As mentioned in last month's Flash newsletter, the
Mid-America Economic Development Council (MAEDC)
held its annual Competitiveness Conference on
December 3-5 in Chicago. The MAEDC is a 10-state
regional association of economic development
professionals. The conference featured several
presentations on how to improve communities, how
to
work with business prospects, as well as how to
integrate skilled labor into an economic development
strategy. Forward Wisconsin's Pepi Randolph and Jan
Alf attended the Competitiveness Conference and
found it very valuable.
The good news is that the MAEDC has made most of
the presentations given at the conference available
on their web site. While "presenter handouts" are
available for seven different presentations, we would
recommend taking a close look at two of them (click
on them to view):
Congratulations to Madison Gas &
Electric's Economic Development Unit for winning
two Awards of Excellence at the MAEDC event. MGE
won awards for best direct mail piece and for best
research report, both in the small market
subcategory. MGE's Jim Mohrbacher (pictured above)
was at the Competitiveness Conference to accept
the awards.

Our three featured partners for the month are
Madison-based Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS),
Sun Prairie-headquartered Wisconsin Public Power

benefits providers in the state, and after 60 years,
remains Wisconsin’s only not-for-profit insurer
offering health plans statewide to the public and
private sectors. WPPI was
created to provide reliable, low-cost power and
services to its member/owners and seeks to be an
effective advocate for its members and their
customers at the highest levels of state and national
government and within the power industry. C.G.
Bretting Manufacturing Co. is a world leader in
the design and manufacture of paper converting

We will be spending a lot of time in the State Capitol from now until mid-summer meeting with current supporters and seeking new ones. We want to do more in 2007 and into the future to bring jobs and investment to the state and we'll be asking for your help with our legislative, marketing and funding initiatives this year. We value your partnership. I hope you like the new look of our Flash newsletter. Forward Wisconsin appreciates your ongoing support!
Thank you,
