Dear Reader,
jan alf

It seems that sometimes everything comes at us in bunches and that is how October is proceeding here at Forward Wisconsin. You can read more about all the events taking place this month later in the "Flash", but suffice it to say that we are very busy right now.

In addition to all our upcoming marketing activities, we are welcoming Mickey Judkins to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and as a manager of Forward Wisconsin (see related article.) Her business and economic development experience in western Wisconsin will be helpful as Forward Wisconsin charts an aggressive future.

While we are saying "hello" to Mickey Judkins, we are also saying "goodbye" to a long-time Forward Wisconsin staff member. Scott Reigstad has logged nearly 14 years with Forward Wisconsin and served under seven different Forward Wisconsin presidents. Scott's worked with business prospects and conducted a range of marketing and communications projects within our organization. He has accepted a position with Alliant Energy in the communications area and will be leaving Forward Wisconsin later this month. We thank Scott for all his dedication to the state's economic development effort and wish him the best in the future.

October's pace will be hectic for Forward Wisconsin. The first week will include participation in the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) Fall Conference in Green Bay on October 3 - 5. Then, it's a quick turnaround heading into the Industrial Asset Management Council conference - a large real estate executive event - in St. Louis on October 6 - 9.

The third week of October includes the Minnesota Marketing Mission, which is officially scheduled for October 16 - 18. As usual, we will be partnering with several Wisconsin economic development professionals to conduct appointments with CEOs in the Twin Cities area. The marketing mission participants include: Andy Albarado (Rusk County Development); Dagmar Beckel-Machyckova (City of Eau Claire); Brian Doudna (Eau Claire Area EDC); Karna Hanna (Sauk County Development Corporation); Michael Kloss (WOW Logistics); Jenny Kuderer (La Crosse Area Development Corporation); Charlie Walker (Chippewa County EDC); and, Bill Warner (Pierce County EDC).

The month wraps up with participation in another large real estate event - the Corporate Real Estate Network Global Summit - which runs from runs from October 28 - 31. All in all, a very busy October for us here at Forward Wisconsin.

We'd all love to have $418 million extra in our investment portfolio and that's exactly what the State of Wisconsin gained in just one year from the state's non-profit arts industry. The Wisconsin Arts Board recently announced the results of the most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the state. The numbers were compiled as part of a national report entitled Arts & Economic Prosperity III.

The data revealed that Wisconsin's nonprofit arts industry generates $418,055,786 in economic activity annually, including 15,103 full-time equivalent jobs; $276,424,120 in resident household income; $27,402,880 in local government revenues; and, $34,437,520 in state government revenues. The $418,055,786 total includes $247,127,217 in spending by arts organizations and $170,928,569 in event-related spending by arts audiences-excluding the costs of admission. The $170,928,569 in event-related spending by arts audiences reflects an average of $22.51 per person in spending for hotels, restaurants, parking, souvenirs, refreshments, or other similar costs-with non-local attendees ($48.95) spending significantly more than local attendees ($17.76).

Forward Wisconsin's Web Marketing Specialist, Sharon Seffrood, recently attended the LocationOne Information System (LOIS) quarterly Advisory Council meeting in Kansas City. LOIS is the software used to power the Wisconsin available building, site and community database, Twenty-two members from several states were present and they were given the opportunity to provide new ideas for LOIS and to receive information on changes that are on the horizon.

LOIS continues to adopt improvements. Earlier this year, LOIS began Phase 1 of a Google Map Integration project and Phase 2 of the process was recently completed. This allows viewers to drill down to a more detailed level of information about each building or site. LOIS also recently implemented a Modified Date feature which displays an out-of-date alert in the administration screen. A new filter was also added which allows administrators to hide out-dated listings from their views of LOIS to ensure that listings are current.

Currently, LOIS covers all or part of 56 of Wisconsin's 72 counties and has over 2,800 available buildings and nearly 1,300 sites listed. Wisconsin community officials, economic development professionals and real estate people can utilize LOIS at no-cost. Wisconsin's building and site database is a service provided by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and Forward Wisconsin.

On September 28, Wisconsin Department of Commerce Secretary and Forward Wisconsin Board Member Mary Burke announced that Mickey Judkins will be providing managerial services to Forward Wisconsin with oversight from the Forward Wisconsin Board of Directors. Judkins was named administrator of Commerce's new Division of International and Export Services. Her duties will be a combination of overseeing export services, encouraging foreign direct investment and providing guidance to Forward Wisconsin.

Judkins is a successful small business owner and entrepreneur and she currently serves on the Wisconsin Development Finance Board. Judkins is also a past president of the Eau Claire Economic Development Corporation (ECDC) and served four years on the ECDC board of directors. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

In late August, the Forward Wisconsin Board of Directors adopted a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to better coordinate Wisconsin's business attraction efforts, improve strategic marketing efforts, and make more effective use of existing resources. Under the MOU, Forward Wisconsin is keeping its status as a public-private, non-profit corporation but will no longer have a president, freeing up more funding for its marketing program.
